That quaint old GRE
We wish we could say you did not have this particular bridge to cross, but everyone who comes to the Hunter MFA program must take the Graduate Record Examination, a standardized test we all know as the GRE. It is a requirement of the Hunter Graduate Admissions School. It must be done. Yet the truth is that it makes no difference, one way or the other, to the faculty members who decide who to offer places to. What we are looking for is talent, not GRE scores. By the time we have managed to change this requirement, you will have an MFA.
So that is all a pain in the neck, but the good news is that you don't have to take the GRE exam before you apply. You can submit your application, wait to see whether you are offered a place, and then, if you get in, you can take the GRE. The deadline for submitting your scores to us is October 1st of the year that you start your MFA classes.
Your Graduate Record Examination results must be no more than five years old. So if you have scores from any time within five years of the application deadline of February 1st, you're welcome to submit them, without re-taking the GRE exam.
If you hold an MA, PhD or other post-graduate degree, and if your GRE scores are more than five years old, you may still submit them to us. To do this, you must send us a copy of the scores or get the institution at which you earned your post-grad degree to send us a copy. In both of these cases, unofficial copies are okay. Lastly you only need to take the GRE General Test, not any GRE Subject Tests.
The Hunter College GRE course code is 2301. You do not need to list a department code, and can leave the "Department Code" section blank.
