Departmental Honors Program
Four-Year BA/MA Program
The Hunter College English Department offers undergraduate students
a wide variety of courses in literary study, writing (including
creative writing), and linguistics. Our courses explore texts from
many perspectives - formal, historical, philosophical, ethical,
and psychological. Our mission is to deepen students' insights into
the power and range of literary expression, while preparing them
for professions in which writing, speaking, and critical thinking
are essential. Students may major or minor in English. English majors
may qualify for departmental honors and have the option of participating
in a four-year BA/MA program in English.
The English Major
The English major offers students four concentrations:
Literatures, Language, and Criticism, Creative
Writing, Adolescence Education,
and English Language Arts. Majors
must choose one concentration within the major. Thirty credits (10
classes) in 300- and 400-level courses are required for each concentration.
English 220 (Introduction to Literature) is a prerequisite for all
English Department literature courses numbered above 220. Students
should take no more than 6 credits past ENGL 220 before declaring
the major. If you declared your major before Fall 2002, see an advisor
for the specific requirements.
The English Minor
Students should declare an English minor when they declare their
major in another department. The minor comprises 12 credits, of
which at least one course (3 credits) must be at the 300 level and
no more than two courses (6 credits) may be at the 100- level. NOTE:
restrictions on the minor are determined by the major department,
not the English department. Please consult with an advisor in your
major department for information on how to minor in English.
Departmental Honors Program
The Departmental Honors program is designed for students who are
interested in a more intensive and rigorous course of study. To
qualify for Honors, students must fulfill two additional requirements
within the major: the Honors Seminar (ENGL 494) and the Honors Essay,
which is usually written in relation to the Honors Seminar under
the supervision of the instructor teaching the course. A student
who completes these requirements successfully and achieves a GPA
in major courses of at least 3.5 and a cumulative GPA of at least
2.8 at the time of graduation will be awarded Departmental Honors.
Students interested in receiving Departmental Honors should consult
with an undergraduate advisor.
Four-Year BA/MA Program in English
This accelerated program provides an opportunity for a few outstanding
undergraduates to complete undergraduate and graduate degrees in
four years. The program is designed primarily for incoming first-year
students, and may be completed in 125-128 credits (95-98 undergraduate,
30 graduate). Requirements include reading ability in a foreign
language, a comprehensive examination, and a master's essay. Graduate
work begins in the junior year. Students interested in taking advantage
of this program should consult with the graduate advisor as soon
as possible.
